Coloured & Scented Beeswax Candles
Beeswax has a natural beauty of its own, from its warm golden colour to its gentle honeyed aroma. But beeswax can also be used to create candles with colour, fragrance and a little more character.
At Stax Of Wax, we make both natural beeswax candles and candles that are coloured or scented, depending on the design and the season.
Some are deliberately left in their natural form so that the colour and character of the beeswax can speak for itself. Others are made with colour or carefully chosen essential oils to create a particular appearance or fragrance.
Natural Beeswax Candles
Natural beeswax has its own colour and aroma, so our uncoloured and unscented candles need very little added to them.
The colour of beeswax can range from pale yellow through to deeper golden shades, depending on factors such as the age of the wax and its history within the hive.
Natural beeswax can also have a gentle, warm aroma. It is part of what makes burning a beeswax candle such a lovely experience, particularly when the candle is made from wax from our own beekeeping.
Because beeswax is a natural material, no two batches are necessarily identical. You may notice small differences in colour, texture or surface appearance between candles, and that's part of their character.
Why Add Colour to Beeswax Candles?
Sometimes colour is simply about design.
We use colour where it helps create a particular style, shape or seasonal feel. It allows us to make candles that are quite different from the traditional golden appearance of natural beeswax.
Coloured beeswax candles can be especially useful for decorative candles, seasonal collections and designs where the colour is an important part of the finished piece.
Even when colour has been added, the candle is still made from beeswax. The colour simply becomes another element of the finished design.
Scented Beeswax Candles
Natural beeswax has a gentle aroma of its own, but sometimes we want to create something different.
For selected candles and seasonal collections, we use essential oils to add fragrance.
This gives us the opportunity to create scents that complement the character of beeswax and bring a different atmosphere to the finished candle.
Our choice of fragrances changes with the seasons and with the products we are making. Some scents are fresh and floral, while others are warmer or more comforting.
The natural aroma of beeswax and an added fragrance are not quite the same thing. A scented candle may still have some of the characteristic aroma of the beeswax underneath the fragrance.
Natural, Coloured or Scented – What's the Difference?
The simplest way to think about our candles is:
Natural beeswax candles
Made without added colour or fragrance, allowing the natural appearance and gentle aroma of the beeswax to come through.
Coloured beeswax candles
Colour is added to create a particular appearance, design or seasonal character.
Scented beeswax candles
Essential oils are added to create a chosen fragrance.
Some candles may combine colour and fragrance, while others are deliberately kept completely natural.
The choice depends on the candle itself and the look or feel we want it to have.
Why We Make Both
For us, beeswax is a wonderfully versatile material.
There is something very special about a simple natural beeswax candle, particularly when you can see its warm golden colour and know that the wax began its journey inside one of our hives.
But we also enjoy the creative side of working with beeswax.
Colour allows us to create different designs, while fragrance gives us another way to make candles that fit different seasons and occasions.
It means our collection can include everything from simple natural candles for everyday use to more decorative and seasonal pieces.
Made in Small Batches
Our candles are handmade rather than mass produced.
Working with beeswax means accepting some natural variation. The colour of the wax, the way a candle sets and the finished surface can all vary slightly from one batch to another.
For coloured and scented candles, there can also be subtle differences in how the colour or fragrance develops through the wax.
We think those small differences are part of the appeal of a handmade beeswax candle.
