🐝 Bumblebees in the Apiary
Someone out there might recognise this bird box.
We were asked a few weeks ago if we could remove it, as it had become home to a colony of bumblebees.
We took this and it was placed at the back of the apiary, attached temporarily to a table — simply because that’s what we had at the time.
🌼 A Close Encounter
Today, with a bit of time, I sat and watched them properly and recorded a short video.
I was surprisingly close, just sitting there, and they were as gentle as can be.
There’s something quite calming about watching bumblebees like this — no fuss, just steady movement in and out of the nest.
🐝 Why It Matters
Bumblebees are just as important as honeybees in the wider environment.
They play a big role in pollination, especially in early and cooler parts of the season when other insects are less active.
Seeing them settle like this is always a good sign that the environment around them is doing something right.
🌿 A Small Moment in the Apiary
Not everything in beekeeping is about honey production.
Sometimes it’s about noticing what else chooses to live alongside the hives — and taking a moment to just observe it. When Bumblebees Move Into a Bird Box they have chosen to repurpose and old home that is no longer needed.
💛 Final Thought
I love having them here.
Simple as that.
